Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)

On July 22, 2014 President Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) which replaces the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) enacted in 1998. Today’s job market is a much different place than in the late ’90s, and WIOA’s vision seeks to address the new climate by: engaging employers and the education system to establish career pathways, emphasizing access to real-world training opportunities, and aligning local areas with regional economic development strategies.

WIOA became effective July 1, 2015. Although the legislation has changed, clients won’t see any changes to the fantastic offering of MEC services such as employment workshops and training resources. If you are new to the MEC or want more information come to an orientation, every Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and Thursday from 1:30 p.m to 2:30 p.m.
